Cancelled Meetings are Value Statements

Have you ever been in a corporate environment and scheduled a meeting, and shown up to an empty conference? Ever participant accepted and had an open schedule and no participant showed up.

Ever committed to a meeting only to have the meeting canceled at the last minute because “another” participant couldn’t make it?

How did this make you feel? Honestly, think back, how did you feel when no one showed or when you were the only one that arrived.

As managers we need to spend that extra-effort to show the people we lead that we value them. If we cancel a meeting with our direct report for another meeting we make an explicit value statement about the worth of the direct report vs the worth of the person in the new meeting. Is that the message we want to send?
