How the Smartest Man I Ever Hired Almost Didn’t Get the Job

This is the story of the smartest person I know. He is a hard-working, kind, generous soul. The kind of man that loves his kids and spends his free-time building a machine learning cluster in his home while actively reading every research paper of note that gets published in the field. This is a man that can have a fun and entertaining conversation on many, many deep topics and a very humble person. This is the story of a man that, despite wanting a reasonable salary, almost didn’t get the job.

You see, in order to hire him we had to have him apply via the online portal. AND we had to get someone in H.R. to select his name before we were allowed to interview him. AND we had to convince someone in H.R. to “like” his screen. Just so we could get to the interview part. Which, BTW, was a formality, he literally “had the job” before applying we just couldn’t get him through the process and we were all internal!

Internal Processes and the dreaded black-box of the ATS are keeping even the most bestest (this really should be a word) people from getting jobs. It took us three weeks to get a super-start through the process and we worked on the inside! If you are a job-seeker remember it is not you. You are smart, valuable, and important. The process can be broken and that is why you are having trouble finding work. One day this process may be fixed. Until it is keep your head up, apply to jobs that are relevant and interesting, and keep learning and doing fun new things. You will land that job!
